Many thanks to Sue Berger and to the Chanhassen Dinner Theatre in Chanhassen, MN, for donating 2 tickets to their Theatre for auction on Ebay. I was able to auction them off for $100, which will go towards the Stephen Hild Endowment fund. I also added a used DVD of my own which brough $5 (hey, it's something!).
So, send me your Ebay items pronto! Remember, you can send CD's, DVD's (must be in good condition), your PC games, small electronics items (mp3 players, phones) and anything that you think is unique and would sell on Ebay. Be sure to send them to my address:
Ricky Grove
Iliad Bookshop
5400 Cahuenga Blvd
North Hollywood, CA 91601
and add a description of the item so I'll know how to sell it. If you want to sell them on Ebay yourself, just check out their easy to follow FAQ here:

If you need any help just contact me through the comments here or on the NAU Alumni Facebook here:

Ebay Auctions to Benefit Stephen Hild
Hi there everyone!
Curt and I are trying to come up with ways to raise money for the Stephen Hild NAU scholarship fund (currently at around $1,400) and we've decided to try some Ebay auctions using your donated items. Here's how it will work:
1. Contact me at rgrove@iliadbooks.com (or in the comments section of this blog) and let me know what you'd like to donate. You can either set up an Ebay auction yourself (it's very easy) or you can send me the item and I will take care of the auction, the payment and the shipping. Either way is fine by me.
2. If you decide to send items to me keep in mind that small, easily shipped materials are much better (and faster, too) to process and ship. By small items, I mean DVD's, books, used electronics (like digital cameras, audio players), unique signed items (photos, books) and anything else you think someone might find interesting.
3. Once I give the ok to send the item, wrap it carefully and send it to my work address:
Ricky Grove
Iliad Bookshop
5400 Cahuenga Blvd
North Hollywood, CA 91601
Some items we don't need are furniture, used TV's, Computers, etc. Much better to simply donate these to a local charity as the shipping is high for large items and will eat up any money we might make selling them on Ebay.
If you don't have any items to donate for the Ebay auction, consider just making a direct gift of cash to the Stephen Hild Scholarship Fund. You can send a check to me or, even better, directly to:
Marjorie Kamine
Director of Development
NAU/College of Arts & Letters
Flagstaff, AZ 86011
Marjorie.Kamine@nau.edu
please note that you should make your check payable to NAU and that it should be for the Stephen Hild Scholarship Fund. Better yet, contact her first before you send anything.
Again, please contact me if you have any items to donate for the big Steve Hild Ebay auction, or if you have any questions about the fund.
Thanks!

What is an endowment?
For those of you who might be wondering (like I was) what an "endowment" is exactly, I thought I'd offer a definition and try to explain how it works with Universities like N.A.U.
Basically, an endowment is an investment fund created by a University or College from donations of cash, stocks or property that earns interest. A percentage of this interest is used to fund a variety of programs at the University. The funds can be used to "endow" a particular scholarship (in the case of our Stephen Hild Design Scholarship), or it can be used to fund a professorship or any other standard college programs.
The University will typically make about 9% or 10% on their invested funds. They will then spend about 4% or 5% to create an endowment. This allows them to keep making money on the investment ahead of the money they are spending. In other words, the endowment begins to fund itself because the percentage return on investment.
Some Universities require a lot of money to start an endowment. Many have a starting amount at $50,000. We are fortunate that Northern Arizona University has a endowment start of $10,000. This is an amount that a bunch of out of work theater people can manage (with planning, of course).
So, our goal with the Stephen Hild endowment fund is to raise $10,000 in FOUR years so that we can put a scholarship check into the hands of a design student when we get together for our next reunion in five years. Notice that we are trying to raise the funds in FOUR years? Why is that? Well, the university has rules about endowments and they require at least a year for the full endowment amount to mature in the investment fund before they can release any funds. That's why we are trying to get
all of the money raised in only four years instead of five.

Hild Endowment Information Center
Hello, everyone! I've created this blog to be a information and reference center for Stephen Hild and the Stephen Hild Endowment that we recently established at the Northern Arizona University School of the Arts. Our goal is to raise money to create an endowment in Steve's name for a young design student at NAU within 5 years.
As Curt Miner put it "we want to put a check in the hand of a student at the next reunion".
I also want to create another DVD for the reunion only this time I'd like to focus on Stephen Hild; his life, his accomplishments, stories about him and anything else we can find out. We've got 5 years to research!
So, this site will be the clearinghouse for the Hild Endowment and for gathering information about Steve and co-ordinating our efforts to raise money. I hope to update this site as often as I can and to keep all of you informed.
Thanks!
Ricky Grove
